University of California, Berkeley

Message from Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau

To Members of the UCB Community:

Robert J. Birgeneau, Chancellor

The Berkeley campus is committed to promoting and supporting a community in which everyone can work and learn together in an atmosphere free of all forms of harassment, exploitation, or intimidation, including sexual harassment.

California law holds employers and employees personally responsible for complying with the proscription against sexual harassment. The campus has developed a web-based interactive education and training program to apprise faculty and staff of their responsibilities with regard to sexual harassment prevention. This program or similar training is expected of all deans, directors, department chairs and managers.

I urge you to complete this relatively brief but comprehensive online training program. You will have taken appropriate steps to become knowledgeable on this issue, and will possess an understanding of how to respond appropriately to situations that may arise. Although this training program focuses primarily on sexual harassment, the underlying principles can be applied to all forms of harassment. Our goal is for all faculty and staff either to complete this program or to participate in one of several workshops within the academic year.

If you have questions or comments about Berkeley's sexual harassment policy, or if you would like more information regarding the identification or prevention of sexual harassment, please contact our Title IX Compliance Officer at (510) 643-7985.

Thank you for taking the time to address these critical issues.

Sincerely,

Robert J. Birgeneau
Chancellor Next
